In this book, Canipe traces the rise of Baptist democracy as reflected in the work of three prominent leaders who made significant contributions to Baptist life between 1900 and 1925. Celebrating the harmony between the principles of their church and the ideals of their state, these three Baptists eloquently articulated what, by the turn of the twentieth-century, had become an article of faith for many of their fellow Baptists: What American democracy is to worldly government, Baptist principles are to religion—God’s chosen way for humanity.

The freedom and responsibility of choice is one of the basic tenets of Baptist beliefs. Seventh Day Baptists as a part of this Baptist heritage for over 350 years have upheld and practiced that right. The decision to follow the Bible instead of
ecclesiastical authority and tradition led them to accept the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath which sets them apart from other Baptists.
A Choosing People: The History of Seventh Day Baptists documents the history of this oldest Sabbathkeeping Christian denomination within the framework of both religious and secular history from the Reformation in Europe to modern times in America.
Originally published in 1992, this book has been thoroughly updated to the present and brings greater accuracy and thoroughness to this engaging history of the choices, struggles, and beliefs of Seventh Day Baptists.

A CHUCH FOR RACHEL is a collection of discourses written for, and among, those who mourn, grieve, struggle, and wonder. The "Rachel" in the title is the Rachel in the Bible, the Rachel who died birthing Benjamin in Genesis, and subsequently became a symbol for sadness in Matthew and Jeremiah: "Rachel, weeping for her children who are no more." The church in the title is any church anywhere that surrounds the Rachels of this world with good theology, strong support, and tender care.

Baptists have been among the most diverse denominations in the world, but, regardless of what some may think, there is an identifiable theological tradition for the Baptists. This book is an interpretive study focussing on Baptist the-ology as it developed in Britain and North America. It is more than a collection of biographical essays or an apology for a particular theological perspective. The author reaches chronologically across four centuries and among British and North American Baptists of varying stripes. He argues that there is a multi-plicity of sources of Baptist thought, including confessions of faith, hymnody, pastors, academic theologians, "schools of thought," African American con-tributors, uniquely Canadian emphases, and those theologians who are "Baptist" but work outside of any direct denominational linkage.
Another important assumption is that Baptists have influenced each other through literary and scholarly dependencies, mentoring, academic affiliations, and informally through associations. Unfortunately, Baptists have made scant the use of "footnotes" until last century, and this has complicated the theolog-ical detective’s task.

Established amid adversity in 1817, the First Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia, ranks among the most important congregations in Southern history for having birthed the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845. A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND COMMUNITY offers new insight into the surprising role First Baptist Church of Augusta played in the formation of the South’s now-largest denomination. Yet in a manner unusual for Baptist churches of the Deep South and in part reflective of the ethos of Augusta, the First Baptist congregation maintained significant relationships with Northern (American) Baptists into the twentieth century. Exemplifying the progressively conservative nature and rapid growth of early to mid-twentieth century urban Southern Baptist life, the church in the decades following dissented from a theologically-calcifying SBC by ordaining women to ministry, welcoming holistic ministry and missions, and transitioning into primarily a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship congregation.
