As the Twenty-First century muddles along, perhaps the phrase “Can I get a witness?” will sharpen our thinking about the current state of religion in American culture, particularly for Protestants. Indeed, the permanent transition that characterizes American religious life offers an opportunity to revisit the word “witness” and its meaning for the future. The materials in this volume survey issues in American religious communities developed through academic research, classroom teaching, sermons, and years of working with ministerial students. A final section is a collection of representative columns written for Associated Baptist Press, addressing questions in American religio-cultural life, past, and present.

Chapters In A Life of Paul
By author: Knox, Hare
Product Code: P036
ISBN: 9780865542815
Product Format: Paperback
Print on Demand title
Price: $35.00
A Reader’s Response to Chapters in a Life of Paul: “In the history of New Testament study there have been several truly seminal books which only gradually found ‘ears that hear,’ but which, upon finding those ears, proceed to affect significantly the course of interpretation. John Knox’s Chapters in a Life of Paul is one of these. If, to some extent, New Testament interpreters were hard of hearing when it first appeared, that is scarcely true today. For example, several recent and justly influential studies of Pauline chronology have been built squarely on the foundation laid by Know. It is, therefore, a happy development that we again have easy access to this seminal work, and that in the revision made with the able assistance of Douglas Hare we have Knox’s mature assessment of the pertinent labors published by others since the original edition.” --J. Louis Martyn, Edward Robinson Professor of Biblical Theology, Union Theological Seminary

Charlotte Atlee White was the first woman officially appointed as a missionary by any denomination or mission agency. After marrying Joshua Rowe, a widowed missionary in Calcutta in 1816, she remained in India to serve with the British Baptists. There she overcame local prejudice against educating girls while starting schools, teaching in Hindi, and writing a Hindi spelling and grammar book as teaching aids

It is a remarkable addition to mission, women's, and Baptist studies.

Jesse Bushyhead was a detachment leader during the forced Indian removal on what has become known as the Trail of Tears. In this capacity, he was responsible for the safe conduct of more than 900 emigrants from Tennessee to Indian Territory in eastern Oklahoma. After the journey, Bushyhead was a principal participant in the formation of the new Cherokee government, providing stability in the turbulent and often internecine struggle between factions. And although without legal training, he served the new government as a chief justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court. Yet during these challenges, Bushyhead, also a Baptist minister, assisted missionary Evan Jones in establishing a vibrant Baptist presence among Cherokees.
