"Whereas this brief period of North Carolina's past could be considered simply a story of wealthy men, family memories and photographs give new life and new meaning to the forgotten history of the Piedmont's quail hunting estates. Our exhibit at the High Point Museum in 2023 told one family's remarkable story but led many visitors to recall how their own ancestors connected to other nearby estates. Russell Rebertus unites both his wife's family and their treasured mementos to one of these lodges, detailing people, events, places, and the natural environment of a century ago--now long gone like Guilford County's rough farmland and bobwhites."

"A fascinating glimpse into the lives of Gilded Age moguls in a North Carolina shooting enclave and the unintended but lasting impact on the environment."

"Russell Rebertus provides details with a special understanding of the Gilded Age, and quail hunting, in particular. Based on family lore that nurtured a love for heirlooms, Piedmont North Carolina history is made real. PINE NEEDLES brings the forgotten past to the present."
