The Old Governor’s Mansion served as the home of Georgia’s governors from 1839–1868. Considered to be one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture in the United States, the mansion was the stage on which the myriad complexities of politics and culture played out within the Empire State of the South.

Of the many books written about the Battle of Gettysburg, none has included selections from the collected memoirs of the 238 chaplains, North and South, who were present at the battle—until now.
Because chaplains were considered noncombatants, most were largely ignored. This unique study has brought to light many of the observations of clergymen, Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish, who accompanied their regiments wherever they marched, camped, or fought. Some of the memoirs have never been published, others unnoticed for a century. Because this is the first book to approach the Battle of Gettysburg from this perspective, rosters of Union and Confederate chaplains reportedly present at the battle are also included.

Despite the state’s importance to the Confederacy and the war’s ultimate outcome, not enough has been written concerning Georgia’s experience during those turbulent years. The essays in this volume attempt to redress this dearth of scholarship. They present a mosaic of events, places, and people, exploring the impact of the war on Georgia and its residents and demonstrating the importance of the state to the outcome of the Civil War.

A longitudinal study of race relations in a major southern city, Macon Black and White examines the ways white and black Maconites interacted over the course of the entire twentieth century. Beginning in the 1890s, in what has been called the "nadir of race relations in America," Andrew M. Manis traces the arduous journey toward racial equality in the heart of Central Georgia. The book describes how, despite incremental progress toward that goal, segrega-tionist pressures sought to silence voices for change on both sides of the color line.

Easter weekend in Macon, Georgia: Connie Hotlzclaw is a good-hearted ex-boxer and small-time loser who can't keep out of trouble. He dreams of carrying his girlfriend, Rita Estes, a pretty Waffle House waitress, away to a ranch in Montana and a new start, away from the hamburger grease and petty hoods. Plato's most magisterial dialogue, the REPUBLIC, takes up the question "what is justice," and its central image is an imaginary city constructed in speech designed to aid in this inquiry. ...Like all of the images and arguments in the REPUBLIC, the Female Drama of the city in speech has meaning both for political and individual justice, but there has been no systematic inquiry into the central books of the REPUBLIC for their meaning for individual justice. That is the ambition of this book.

The core question of this book: how a great lawyer who comes to represent important causes, emerges out of the racist, paternalistic, and self-perpetuating establishment of rural Georgia in the 1950s? What about Tommy Malone led him to take on the power structure in his community and begin representing people who were injured against prominent doctors and hospitals? It wasn't money because there wasn't any money to be made at that time. The answers are as varied as human experience, but undoubtedly, Malone sensed a "guiding hand" directing him to the good. There was no teacher or mentor to illumine the path forward, just the gradual accretion of experience, knowledge, insight, and pain on a sensitive soul, kindling fierce passion and righteous anger.

The authors of the articles in this volume take up the issues discussed above along with many others. The cumulative effect of intellectually appropriating their efforts would be, first, an analysis of some of the crucial issues in logical theory, epistemology, personal identity theory, and religious language; and, second, a review of some further episodes in the history of philosophical theology offered here in a reversed chronological order. The contributors make no attempt to become edifying authors, but as one thinks philosophically one thinks about oneself, and that, Socratically, is to be edified.

Local church history is important. What great thinkers have written and what denominational bodies have declared in resolutions and organizational ministries are important, but "lived religion" at the ground level provides a fuller picture of the story of the Christian faith. The fifty-year (1967-2017) story of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of those narratives that richly adds to our understanding of how faith has been lived in a particular setting.
