The Spirit Divided is a collection of letters, reports, and recollections in which Union army chaplains describe their motives and methods, their failures and achievements. Some threw away their somber black uniforms and became dashing staff officers. Scorning these “chaplains militant,” others were, in the words of a battlefield journalist, “bearers of the cup of cold water and the word of good cheer.

Volume four of this incredible series begins with letters following the birth of Emily Frances Judson. These letters reflect correspondence between home, family, and friends; they also reflect the life within the missionary society in Burma with letters between the missionaries. The letters of 1849 show serious health issues for both Emily and Adoniram, the conclusion of Adoniram's life, and Emily's return to the United States.

Well-known preacher and literary scholar John Killinger has combined his talents to provide a revolutionary study of the Gospel of Mark. On the basis of textual patterns he discovered in a Gospel long believed to be “naive” and “unstudied,” Killinger reveals evidence that the two calming-of-the-sea stories traditionally regarded as miracles are actually post-resurrection stories. This explanation not only accounts for the absence of such stories at the end of the Gospel, where the other Gospels place them, but suggests that Mark might actually be a Gnostic document, as the Gnostics believed in the resurrection of Jesus but did not emphasize his physical resurrection.

Steven Overman explores the concordant values of the Protestant ethic, capitalism, and sport by applying German scholar Max Weber’s seminal thesis. Weber demonstrated a relationship between the Protestant ethic and a form of economic behavior he labeled the “spirit of capitalism.”
The work introduces readers to the doctrines and values arising out of the Protestant Reformation, notably the strong affirmation of a “calling” and the influences of worldly asceticism.

Taking significant events in Baptist history, the writers tell the amazing Baptist story of the voluntary approach to the Christian faith in popluar, nontechnical but appealing ways. The intentionally brief chapters are, for the most part, void of heavy, historical notes. Designed as an introductory study for students, laity, and parish ministers, more advanced students will also benefit from a close reading of this text.

Thomas Aquinas has long been understood to have reconciled faith and reason. Typically, he is understood as having provided justification for faith by means of proof. In this book, Rosental argues that Aquinas's account of faith is not simply an account of justified belief, at least as it is typically considered in contemporary philosophy. This book is an erudite and accessible reading of this most fundamental issue in Thomistic studies.

The new edition of Scandalous Providence: The Jesus Story of the Compassion of God constructs a postmodern interpretation of the providence of God through a narrative rendering of providence on the basis of the epochal moments in the story of Jesus, a distinctive modern reconstruction of the theology of providence through a critical, non-reductionist interpretation of the Gospel traditions on the one side, and contemporary narratives of lived experience within the scientific understanding of the world on the other. Significant theological problems have rendered the reformulation of the doctrine of providence elusive and unachievable for more than half a century.

Father Mercer tells the story of the life and labors of Jesse Mercer, a leader in Georgia Baptist life during the first half of the nineteenth century. Yet, rather than telling the story of a larger-than-life pastor with whom few “ordinary” pastors can identify, the books reveals how one who is faithful in small things can, over time, bear much fruit for the Lord.
