BAPTISTS IN EARLY NORTH AMERICA--MEHERRIN, VIRGINIA features the transcription of the records of Meherrin, an eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Baptist church on the frontier of Virginia in rural Lunenburg County. Despite its backwater location and relatively small congregation, Meherrin played a significant role in one of the great episodes of Baptist history in young America: the rise of Separate Baptists and their influence in Virginia.

In this first comprehensive treatment of the role of American churches in the processes that led to the Civil War, Goen suggests that the division of Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist churches along the lines of slavery foreshadowed and was a major cause of the imminent dissolution of the Union.

Taking significant events in Baptist history, the writers tell the amazing Baptist story of the voluntary approach to the Christian faith in popluar, nontechnical but appealing ways. The intentionally brief chapters are, for the most part, void of heavy, historical notes. Designed as an introductory study for students, laity, and parish ministers, more advanced students will also benefit from a close reading of this text.

Resources for preachers steadily appear, called forth by the perennial need on the part of working pastors for helpful and inspirational materials backed by tested experience, reverent scholarship, and creative insights. The essays in this book are of that cast, and each essay is the work of an experienced practitioner-scholar in the field of preaching. The chapters focus on the preaching ministry of Gardner Calvin Taylor, in whose honor the volume was prepared. They are offered, with affection and esteem, by colleagues, students, and friends, fellow preachers all, whose own attempts to speak the unsearchable riches of Christ owe much to the life and labors of Gardner C. Taylor.

Middletown Baptist Church in Monmouth County ("Old First Church" since 1963) is the oldest Baptist congregation in New Jersey and one of the constituting churches of the Philadelphia Baptist Association in 1707. Church meeting minutes, membership rolls, congregational correspondence, and personal letters cover the period 1712 to 1811. The earliest years after the church's founding in 1688 are largely unknown due to discord and subsequent excision of records. Records for the years 1741 to 1785 are incomplete, but transcribed entries from "Elder Mott's Journal" provide a first-hand account of the church's life during that period.

As a compilation of twenty-three papers prepared for the Ninth International Conference on Baptist Studies, this volume is broad in scope. Although the conference was not held due to COVID-19, this book presents the findings prepared for it, with chapters from Baptists in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. It thus augments scholarly perspectives on Christianity and gender, including insights on exemplary Baptist women leaders, the diversity of global Baptist gender roles, and Baptist constructions of masculinity.

Charlotte Atlee White was the first woman officially appointed as a missionary by any denomination or mission agency. The scandal of her 1815 appointment required her to prevail over gender bias, survive attempts to revoke her appointment, and surmount the challenge of insufficient funding. After marrying Joshua Rowe, a widowed missionary in Calcutta in 1816, she remained in India to serve with the British Baptists. There she overcame local prejudice against educating girls while starting schools, teaching in Hindi, and writing a Hindi spelling and grammar book as teaching aids

THE CONTESTABLE CHURCH offers a positive witness to the peace of God that is the horizon for conflict and invites Baptists to the practice of vigorous dissent for the sake of living faithfully. Instead of revealing a dissolution into chaos, dissent is an expression of hope that Christians are a pilgrim people for whom a vulnerable and challenging intimacy leads the way home.

After World War I, a German bishop described the twentieth century as the "century of the Church." In this twenty-first century, the truth of his words have resonated with both Protestants and Catholics wrestling with the meaning and mission of the Christian community. In order to comprehend the Church, one must explore its own self-understanding throughout the centuries: from its foundation in the preaching of Jesus, the Fathers of the Church, the Medieval Period, the Reformation, and the emergence of the modern and postmodern technological world of today.
