Atlanta, Georgia, is the New South city. No two names are more associated with its emergence than William Tecumseh Sherman and Henry W. Grady: Sherman the destroyer and Grady the New South's principal architect. Henry Grady advocated for a more urban South but had a vision for improved farm life as well.

Civil War historians have remained baffled over the Cassville controversies for the past 150 plus years. There are two versions of events: Confederate commanding General Joseph E. Johnston's story, and Lieutenant General John Bell Hood's story. But Federal General William T. Sherman had other plans, and it was Confederates who would be "surprised" instead.

Sam Williams is one of the nation's leading experts in urban competitiveness. Over seventeen years at the helm of a top chamber of commerce and twenty-two years as a partner in a global architect-development company, Williams earned a national reputation for harnessing the power of CEOs to make cities thrive.
With their long-term view and the ability to garner support from many sectors, CEOs can often successfully address urban challenges too big for political and bureaucratic leaders to solve alone.
In The CEO as Urban Statesman, Williams uses case studies to argue that business leaders can and should contribute to their communities by using their business skills to solve public policy problems--and he tells them how to do it.
These projects are all different, but they share common themes. Williams explores each case in detail, distilling best practices as well as cautionary tales for business leaders who want to help their cities thrive.

Hanserd Knollys was one of the most influential Baptists of the seventeenth century. University educated, he provided guidance for Baptists on many key issues that formed their identity. In debate with other religious leaders he defended conscious commitment to Christ by each individual, the congregational character of the church, and the necessity of religious liberty. In addition to these three foundational beliefs, Knollys provided guidance for early Baptists on debated issues of practice. He endorsed the value of learning from the writings of inspired women, he endorsed congregational singing, and he supported raising funds for the support of ministers. In all of these matters he provided precedents and strong arguments for Baptist practice. Knollys served as pastor of a local London congregation, extended Baptist influence through preaching tours and provided a high standard of education in the schools he organized and led.

"When we prepared to leave Washington in January 1981, my White House staff and cabinet members took up a collection to buy me a going-away gift," says Jimmy Carter. "My friends then gave the collected funds to Sears, Roebuck and Co., with directions to supply me with whatever tools and equipment I needed for a completely furnished woodworking shop in what had been our garage. This has turned out to be one of the best gifts of my life, and I have devoted a good portion of my spare time to developing my skills and designing and building furniture."

“Prophetic in the sense that it warns of the consequences of the failure to acknowledge, repent of, and make restitution for sin, Littell’s book confronts Christendom with its massive betrayal of the Jewish people when the Holocaust came upon them and of its continuing unwillingness to admit betrayal. The multifarious anti-Semitism that led both to the Holocaust and to the churches’ response to it is traced to an ancient but persistent error in Christian thought: the flight from history—the tendency to speculate, ‘spiritualize,’ and systematize rather than to remember, recapitulate, reenact, and receive grace and truth from a real tradition of historical events….The healing and restorative potentialities of this book make it deserving of the widest possible circulation.”

THE DAMNEDEST SET OF FELLOWS tells the story of one of the finest artillery batteries in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Fighting in almost every major battle in the war's Western Theater, their first baptism of fire occurred at Tazewell, in East Tennessee. Later, they battled at Champion Hill in the Vicksburg Campaign, at Missionary Ridge and Tunnel Hill near Chattanooga, and throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Later, they fought upon the snowy fields of Nashville, and finally at Salisbury, North Carolina, where they manned their guns despite having no infantry support.

William Bartram has rightly been hailed as an astute, perceptive chronicler of Native American societies. In some ways he was able to see beyond the dominant ideologies of his day, some of which divided the world’s peoples into categories based on perceived savagism and civility. This was a noble effort, and worthy of praise more than two centuries later. Bartram could also use Native American civilization as a foil for an emerging white American society he saw as crass and grasping. Writing in this romantic mode, he was capable of downplaying the extent to which Native communities were fully part of the modern world that they and European invaders created together.
