The Revolution of the Candles
The Revolution of the Candles

by Jörg Swoboda with Richard V. Pierard as editor
Translated by Edwin Arnold

The Revolution of the Candles is the only scholarly account of the East German revolution of 1989-1990 published by Baptists and detailing their involvement in those significant events. Their story recounts the courage of Christians who acted on the basis of their spiritual convictions. This book includes a brief historical introduction to the communist system of East Germany (the German Democratic Republic). The book focuses on the unique features of the problems facing Christians in a state that was offically atheistic yet tolerated churches. The Revolution of the Candles provides a day-by-day account of the mounting pressure on the German Democratic Republic regime by individuals who were on the scene during the momentous times of courageous actions that led to its collapse.
