The Man from Enterprise
The Biography of John Amos

By Seymour Shubin

John Beverly Amos didn't want his biography written during his lifetime. He once made an attempt to write his life story, jotting down some notes and working with a writer. But the he called it off. He just had too many things yet to do in his life, he explained in that soft spoken, gently-smiling, down-home way of his. He was right. He had accomplished more in his life than most people even dream of, but there was so much more to do-to contribute, a word he probably never would have used in regard to himself, but which so many people whose lives he touched use to help define him. He was the epitome of the American dream.

Born in a small Alabama town, he started a weekly newspaper when he was thirteen, became a country lawyer, and eventually was primary founder of the billion-dollar American Family Corporation, whose chief subsidiary is and international life insurance company-American Family Life Assurance Company (AFLAC)-which he founded when he was only in his early thirties. He was a friend and advisor to presidents, legislators, and international leaders.

Seymour Shubin, a full-time free-lance writer, has published nine novels, including the best-selling, Anyone's My Name, The Captain, and Fury's Children. His articles and short stories have appeared in many national magazines.
