Artists and Writers

A landmark late twentieth-century pictorial archive that beautifully chronicles, in illuminating detail, fifty important American artists and writers in place: Edward Albee, Ann Beattie, John Chamberlain, Annie Dillard, John Hersey, Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard, Roy Lichtenstein, Alison Lurie, William Manchester, James Merrill, John D. MacDonald, James A. Michener, Jules Olitski, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, Isaac B. Singer, and Joy Williams, among others.

Southernmost Art and Literary Portraits features eighty-five engaging black-and-white studies, many of which are being made public here for the first time. This collection is the first gallery of portraits to be paired with revealing quotes from the subjects themselves, along with biographical profiles. Recognizing these distinguished men and women and raising awareness of their work, the book offers fresh insight, intimate remembrances, and exclusive information of widespread and lasting interest. Thought provoking and often surprising, this work includes fourteen influential artists, twelve Pulitzer Prize winners, a Nobel Prize Laureate, seven recipients of the National Book Award, and eight of the world’s best-selling authors.

Jimm Roberts is an Orlando-based freelance photographer. His work has appeared in publications from the New York Times Magazine to Rolling Stone and Vogue; on record album covers from Idlewild South by The Allman Brothers Band to The Best of Otis Redding; on the dust jackets of books by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors such as Alison Lurie and James A. Michener; on Dateline NBC, as well as in museum galleries. He is founder of the photography department of the Orlando Museum of Art where he taught a popular series of classes and workshops from 1971–1981.
