In Paulus, Then and Now: A Study of Paul Tillich’s Theological World and the Continuing Relevance of his Work, John J. Carey clarifies previously neglected foundational aspects of Tillich’s thought. Carey places Tillich’s theological work in political, social, economic, and scholarly context. He also explains Tillich’s thinking on Luther, Marx, history, and politics, and his unique perspective on the Bible and on biblical authority. Having accomplished these things, Carey then moves to show how Tillich’s thinking can be applied to contemporary problems.

John J. Carey is Wallace M. Alston Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. In his long and distinguished career he has studied Tillich’s thought extensively, and has published widely on the subject. His previous books include several monographs and coedited volumes on Tillich. He is also, with Jackson Lee Ice, joint compiler of the acclaimed The Death of God Debate (1967). His lifelong affiliation with the North American Paul Tillich Society included especially his editing of the important trilogy Kairos and Logos (1978, 1984), Theonomy and Autonomy (1984), and Being and Doing (1987), all published by Mercer University Press.
