Letters to Amanda
The Civil War Letters of Marion Hill Fitzpatrick, Army of Northern Virginia

Jeffrey C. Lowe and Sam Hodges, editors

Sergeant Major Marion Hill Fitzpatrick, a soldier in the 45th Georgia Regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia, wrote his wife Amanda over 100 letters, frequently describing both the horror of combat and the deplorable conditions of hospitals. Fighting in the corps of A. P. Hill, Fitzpatrick, an extremely literate individual, reveals his loyalty for the Confederacy and most of all to his family. His letters reveal a man who longed to be home with his beloved wife and their newborn son. These letters testify to the humanity, courage, and dedication of the Civil War soldier. Although they have been around for over two decades in a private family printing, these letters are published complete with annotations in a paperback edition for the first time.

Jeffrey C. Lowe and Sam Hodges are great-great grandsons of Marion Hill Fitzpatrick. Lowe, a graduate of the University of the South and of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is pastor of the First Baptist Church of Riverdale, Georgia. Hodges, a graduate of Furman University, is a Charlotte NC-based reporter for the Mobile Register and author of the novel B-Four.
