Cotton, Fire, & Dreams The Robert Findlay Iron Works and Heavy Industry in Macon, Georgia 1839-1912 by Robert S. Davis, Jr. European "Annaliste" historians interpreted social history by focusing on the life of one individual as told through a revealing biographical document. This new study provides a social history of Macon in the Annaliste format, focusing on the career of industralist Robert Findlay. Davis gracefully blends biography with the social history of Macon and the first major manufacturing in Georgia. Cotton, Fire, and Dreams is a remarkable achievement. Based on the skimpiest of evidence-a two-page eulogy is essentially the only biographical document that has survived-Robert Davis Jr. was able to reconstruct the life and career of Robert Findlay, a modestly significant industrialist of the antebellum South.
