Religion in the New MillenniumFrederick J. Parella and Ray Bulman, editors The book, like the New Harmony conference from which it emerged, was inspired by the theological work of twentieth-century theologian Paul Tillich. Above all, Tillich was known as a pre-eminent theological interpreter of modern culture. Tillichs long and fruitful career was committed to examining the many interconnections between theology and secular culture and his book The Religious Situation (first published in Berlin in 1926) was exclusively dedicated to that task. Religion in the New Millennium extends Tillichs legacy through in-depth analysis of the religious situation at this unique moment in time. The same themes that concerned Tillich in 1926 continue to intrigue the contributors to Religion in the New Millennium. In addition to topics of science, art, politics, economics, psychology, ethics, mysticism, and utopianism, the contributors examine questions that would have been either unknown or at best peripheral to Tillich such as gender issues, ecological concerns, interreligious dialogue, and high-tech and computer technology The essays in Religion in the New Millennium are preceded by a theme-setting article by Langdon Gilkey suitably entitled The Religious Situation at the end of the Twentieth Century and conclude with an epilogue on the religious meaning of the new millennium.
